Introduction
After watching Tight Jeans as part of my research I knew that I wanted to create a film centred around characters and dialogue rather than plot, and so chose a simple idea to explore a variety of different emotions in just two characters.

Tight Jeans
- In just 8 minutes, Tight Jeans, I felt, was able to translate a great deal of comedy and insight into characters very effectively, using such a simple premise.
I was particularly inspired by:
- the use of the camera: constantly vacillating to show a natural back and forth of dialogue
- The use of long shots and lack of editing to create a true sense of realism
- The use of mise en scene (costume especially) which helps to develop each character using colour, as well as insert them in their social context.
Fly
- As I want to use the setting of a car the Fly for obvious reasons inspired me as it manages to film expertly within the confines of a car.
- The constant cuts between interior and exterior are particularly effective- this is definitely something that I would like to experiment with.
- Though sound is used for suspense, the car noises are very realistic and are very key in helping the audience suspend their disbelief- like the constant sound of the engine running.
Ernest Hemmingway: The Hills look like White Elephants
- after reading this poem I was inspired by Hemmingway's style of storytelling - known as the iceberg theory- with an emphasis on keeping most of the story 'under the surface'.
- By not describing everything that happens, merely describing the key parts that lead to emotions and reactions, he could get the reader to think for himself and make the world of his story more immersive.
- The scenario of this poem - it is implied in a man and woman's conversation that the woman is reluctant to abort her baby, the man seems to be promoting this will the lady doesn't
- I particularly liked the way that so much was left unsaid, and the reader must act as detectives themselves- so it inspired me for my film to apply the some technique where we begin in the action and the audience must decipher the context themselves.
