Tight Jeans

 Tight Jeans

Directed by Destiny Ekaragha

'Tight Jeans is a light comedy that touches on modern attitudes towards other cultures. It explores the ignorance we tend to have of one another, sometimes without even realising it.' - Ekaragha

Three black teenagers are becoming frustrated while waiting for their friend. A young white lad walks past wearing super tight jeans. The boys look on until one of them asks the pivotal question, "How can a man wear jeans that tight?" This sparks a hilarious debate about race and culture.

The film relies heavily on dialogue to comment on issues of race and stereotypes in a modern 2008 society. Although little happens the spectator is inserted into their conversation happening on an estate in London. The film does not have a typical 3 Act structure, which is instead more free flowing. By having this informal structure the conversation feels genuine and as a conversation would feel.

Cinematography is used to strengthen this feeling of natural and casual conversation. With a lack of editing it flows naturally, and the audience are not broken from their immersion, in fact the take after we see the boy in tight jeans lasts nearly 2 minutes but this does not register with a spectator.

The camera is constantly slowly tracking from side to side when the 3 boys are captured in this mid shot. This creates the sense that time is passing which is significant as we know the boys are waiting for a friend. Similarly the camera's movement also emulates the back and forth felt in a conversation.

Costume: used to show contemporary and urban style. Close up highlighting the cultural context and youth.

Performance: very genuine and authentic- humour, gestures (twitching and restless energy)--> all of this comes across naturally due to long takes and lack of editing.
