The narrative structure of Over creates mystery and prolongs the suspense that the audience feels. This ensures that the audience members are active in the making of meaning throughout the film -"I make the viewer be the detective"- Threlfall.
There are also shots of the crimes scene and pieces of evidence that are being observed, really allowing the audience to be the detective and attempt to uncover the mystery for themselves. However, whilst the spectator may feel they are uncovering aspects to the mystery, nothing will prepare them for the dramatic and abrupt ending.
Deep focus allows us to look wherever we want, with a democratic type of shot. This coupled with the long takes creating a lot of anticipation- further forcing the spectator to engage. The long lingering shots makes the mystery develop almost unbearably slowly with the first five shots lasting three minutes and a half.
Via the use of long takes and wide shots Threlfall is able to naturally translate the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the neighbourhood, which is then corrupted with the abrupt falling and loud penetrating sound of the car alarm.
Sound is very minimal throughout the film with no non diegetic sound. this makes the setting even more realistic of a quiet suburban area, that is almost too quiet, creating an eerie sense something is wrong. Therefore, sound and the lack of sound creates dramatic tension.
