Operator
Operator
Directed by Yann Henman
Sound is used exceptionally in this film. The sheer terror of the fire is displayed clearly via the panicked tone of the actress of Gemma calling. Arguably it is even more effective this way than if we had actually seen the fire. Therefore, we are positioned with the operator who too can only hear what is really happening. Gemmas tone is greatly contrasted to the calm tone of the operator which is incredibly moving and powerful for the spectator.
Diegetic music e.g. crackling of fire coupled with the non diegetic music which underlines the entire film and builds as the tension does. Incredible use of silence as the phone hangs up with no diegetic noise either- brief pause for reflection which is very moving and emphasises just how overwhelming it must be for the operators character.
Low level lighting - the operators emotions are seen clearly and also offers a more dramatic and serious atmosphere. Also ensures that the audience focuses on nothing but the operators facial expressions.
